The European Geothermal Congress (EGC) 2025 in Zurich marked a major milestone for the COMPASS Project, with an exceptional presence across the scientific and technical programme. With 16 papers, posters, and presentations submitted by consortium partners, COMPASS demonstrated the full breadth of its multidisciplinary achievements — from materials and mechanical engineering to modelling, environmental assessment, and social acceptance research.
Over the course of the week, COMPASS partners contributed to oral sessions, poster presentations, and expert panels, covering every major domain addressed in the project’s work plan:
📌 Advanced Materials & Well Integrity
New results from EHLA cladding development and corrosion-testing campaigns (TWI, HORNET, ON Power).
Progress on flexible foam cement formulations and high-temperature cement testing (CURISTEC, SINTEF).
Laboratory validation of APB relief systems and thermal-stress mitigation approaches (ÍSOR).
These contributions highlighted the project’s advances in reducing casing failure risks, extending well lifetime, and lowering the environmental footprint of deep geothermal development.
📌 Digital Design, Modelling & Simulation Tools
Partners shared new developments on:
Casinteg integrated well-integrity and thermal–mechanical modelling software.
Life-cycle and cost-modelling tools developed under WP7.
Simulation workflows linking material selection, thermal stresses, corrosion behaviour, and APB risk.
These tools, part of COMPASS’s Digital Well Design Package, support safer and more cost-efficient geothermal development and are central to the project’s exploitation roadmap.
📌 Environmental & Socio-Economic Insights
COMPASS also stood out in the social-science track, with contributions on:
Environmental and cost assessments.
Public acceptance and NIMBY mitigation strategies.
Communication guidelines for geothermal developers (presented at the roundtable on “Enhancing Awareness of Geothermal Energy”).
These results highlight the project’s integrated approach — technical excellence paired with social engagement and policy readiness.
📌 A Unified Project Presence
Across posters, talks, and roundtables, COMPASS partners ensured that every key result was represented in Zurich. This cohesive and highly visible participation reinforced COMPASS’s position as one of Horizon Europe’s flagship initiatives for superhot geothermal innovation, validating the depth and relevance of the project’s work as it enters its final stages.
With contributions reflecting every work package, EGC 2025 served not only as a platform for scientific exchange but also as the final major dissemination milestone for COMPASS ahead of project closure.
