As geothermal exploration gains momentum in the Canary Islands, the COMPASS project — in collaboration with the EU-funded GREET GEO project and local partners — is hosting a regional stakeholder workshop to support alignment around the development and deployment of high-temperature and superhot geothermal resources.

This half-day event, held at the Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, will bring together project developers, researchers, operators, and public authorities to explore technological, regulatory, and socio-environmental aspects of geothermal development.

The workshop is part of the COMPASS project stakeholder engagement efforts among European island nations, which focuses on cost-effective, sustainable solutions for drilling and completing high-enthalpy geothermal wells. As the Canary Islands prepare for deep drilling operations in the coming months, this dialogue will be an opportunity to exchange knowledge and address local challenges.

This effort is led by COMPASS partners COSVIG and GEORG. 

Key topics will include:

• Mitigating mechanical stress and corrosion in geothermal wells

• Deployment of Extreme High-Speed Laser Cladding (EHLA) technologies

• Flexible cementing and casing systems

• Environmental and financial assessment of geothermal solutions

• Local acceptance and integration into the regional energy mix

The event will feature two core sessions:

1. Presentation of recent technological results from COMPASS

2. Panel discussion with regional stakeholders on regulatory hurdles, energy market dynamics, and implementation pathways.

Participation is free of charge, and includes a networking lunch and coffee break. The event is conducted in English and will include a hybrid connection option for remote participants.
