Final COMPASS Project Meeting at EGC 2025: Preparing for Completion and Future Collaborations
November 2, 2025Overview
Within the COMPASS project, a new generation of digital tools has been developed to improve the way geothermal wells are designed and evaluated — particularly in superhot and high-enthalpy geothermal environments.
These tools bring together thermal, mechanical, chemical, and economic modelling to help engineers and developers plan wells that are safer, more sustainable, and more cost-efficient.
Developed Tools and Models
Advanced Cement Models
Simulation tools that predict the placement and hydration of foamed cement systems.
They integrate thermo-chemo-poro-elastoplastic behaviour, allowing users to understand how cement evolves under extreme temperature and pressure.
Set-Cement Structural Models
Material models that account for porosity and pore-pressure effects, coupled with hydration dynamics to establish realistic starting conditions for structural analysis.
Wellbore Thermic Modelling
A multiphase-flow simulation for predicting temperature and pressure profiles throughout the life of a well — from stimulation to production.
Structural Integrity and Thermal Fatigue Analysis
Numerical tools to evaluate mechanical integrity and thermal fatigue of critical well components such as casings, cement, and couplings, identifying stress concentration points and potential weak spots.
Cost and Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) Models
Economic and environmental models that estimate well completion costs (€ / m) and surface plant costs (€ / MW), using SimaPro and the ecoinvent database in line with ISO 14040/44 standards.
Decision-Support Platform
A web-based system integrating all models into a single, user-friendly interface.
It enables comparison of design alternatives, materials, and investment options, supporting both technical and strategic decision-making.
Software Platforms
CurisIntegrity
Specialised software for modelling cement system behaviour in high-temperature geothermal and oil & gas wells.
Implements the cement placement and hydration models developed within COMPASS.
