Integrated well design and decision-support software platform
December 2, 2025COMPASS Partners Meet in Zurich to Finalize Project Outcomes and Shape Future Collaboration
In parallel with the European Geothermal Congress 2025, the COMPASS consortium gathered in Zurich for its final in-person project meeting — a strategic milestone bringing partners together as the project moves into its concluding phase.
Hosted during EGC 2025, the meeting provided a focused setting for partners to:
Review the final technical outputs across Work Packages.
Validate replication, exploitation, and IPR pathways.
Finalize contributions to the project’s closing deliverables.
Align remaining responsibilities ahead of submission to the European Commission
Discuss post-project collaboration opportunities and next steps
📌 Consolidating Results and Deliverables
All partners presented the final status of their Key Exploitable Results (KERs), including:
Cladding and corrosion protection
Flexible foam cements and thermal-stress mitigation
Simulation and digital design tools
Social, environmental, and policy outputs
The consortium reviewed the final testing datasets, exploitation forms, and protection strategies, building on the IPR workshops held in Trondheim (2023) and Sheffield (2024).
📌 Strategy for Replication and Uptake
A key focus was the replication roadmap, including:
Application of COMPASS technologies to conventional high-enthalpy wells
Spillover potential for CCS, hydrogen storage, and offshore energy systems
Pathways for licensing, pilot demonstrations, and standardisation engagement
Partners also discussed opportunities to align COMPASS findings with the SET Plan, REPowerEU, and emerging geothermal policy frameworks.
📌 Post-Project Vision & Future Initiatives
As the project approaches closure, partners expressed strong commitment to maintaining cooperation beyond Horizon Europe. Discussions explored:
Joint applications for future EU projects
Potential pilot validation sites for COMPASS technologies
Establishing a COMPASS-inspired industry–research alliance
Continued collaboration with GEOSYN and other related HE projects under the existing collaboration framework
The meeting reaffirmed that the COMPASS partnership extends beyond the funded project — forming a foundation for long-term innovation in geothermal well design.
📌 A Strong Finish at EGC 2025
Holding the final project meeting during EGC 2025 ensured high visibility and excellent alignment with the technical programme, where COMPASS results were widely disseminated through talks, posters, and panels.
As the consortium moves toward final reporting, Zurich provided the ideal setting to celebrate achievements, secure continuity, and set the direction for future European geothermal innovation.
